THE AM BAND
AM (Amplitude
Modulated) radio uses frequencies from 535 - 1705kHz. AM signals follows the curvature of the
earth and therefore they are ideal for regional coverage - a 50 kilowatt station
can cover over 100 miles
during the day. At night an AM station's signal may cover over 1000 miles.
THE FM BAND
FM (Frequency
Modulated) radio uses frequencies from 88mHz - 108mHz. FM signals utilize high frequencies and
therefore coverage is limited to "line-of-sight". This is why you will find FM station antennas
located on mountaintops, the tops of buildings or very tall towers. FM is ideal
for local coverage - low power FM station coverage has an approximate radius of
25 miles, medium power has a 45-65 mile radius and high power
has an approximate radius of 100 miles.
THE SW (SHORTWAVE) BAND
Shortwave signals
are quite different. One transmitter broadcasting on the correct frequencies
can literally cover a majority of the globe! Shortwave radio uses very high
frequencies from 3mHz - 21mHz. The higher the frequency the shorter the signal
(how the name "shortwave" was
derived).
These short waves
of energy are beamed hundreds of miles into the atmosphere until they reach
special layers of the "ionosphere". The ionosphere is like an electrically
charged mirror that reflects radio waves back to Earth. The reflection of the
shortwave signal is known as "sky-waves". These sky-waves can bounce back to
Earth hundreds and thousands of miles as they travel around the globe. This is
why a station broadcasting from the USA can be heard in Europe, Africa,
Australia, the Middle East, and many other countries.
Here in the United
States studies reveal that more and more people are listening to Christian
messages on their radio, television and on the Internet rather than attending a
weekly service in church. Did you also know that 75% of households own a
shortwave radio. Shortwave radio broadcasting is still the most economical
means of reaching millions of people around the world; with its large area of
coverage an the dawning of the digital shortwave era, more and more people are
able to listen to worldwide shortwave radio stations.
Today shortwave is
the only medium that is not restricted by laws in the receiving countries. This
means that you will not encounter governmental and cultural barriers……shortwave
radio overcomes geographic, political and economic barriers. When broadcasting
on shortwave radio you are reaching countless numbers of people who have limited
or no access to the Gospel. Shortwave stations provide you with the power to
evangelize and expand your ministry without having to travel to different areas
of the world thereby saving you time and expenses. Plus, you are not burdened
by security and safety issues that may present themselves when traveling to the
many different areas of the world that you are currently ministering to with
your shortwave broadcasts.
Even in today’s
world of ever changing technology we are always reminded by many of our
listeners that radio remains to be their 1st choice of broadcast when
using media in their spiritual learning process. Radio remains to be one of the
finest and most economical ways of spreading God’s Good News to all areas of the
world and to people of all walks of life. We believe in our work and most
importantly in our partnerships with our ministries, stations and listeners.
Being of service to you, witnessing your Outreach and its effect on your
listeners is absolutely amazing for us at Pan American Broadcasting.
If you are a
currently broadcasting may your Outreach ministry continue to be a beacon of
light for those crying to break through the darkness in order to seek a better
way of life. And, may your Outreach ministry continue to strengthen the
Christian walk of the Believers.
For those of you
considering a radio, television or Internet Outreach please let us hear from
you. We will answer any questions you may have and prove to you how easy &
affordable it is to minister to millions of people around the world!
